Leather Oral History
History, it is said, is written by the
winners. More, though, it is written by the survivors. Those
who survive get to tell their stories; those who do not
survive have their stories lost.
The leather community is rife with survivors. Survivors
of AIDS, of course, but also those who have survived
all the drama brought upon us by ourselves and by others. Those
who remember the early bike clubs. Those who can
run down a list of two dozen leather clubs in their local
city which have come and gone. Those who have owned
bars, started leather businesses, run leather clubs. And
every year, some of these survivors are lost.
All of us have stories. Maybe you
weren’t a mover or shaker, a pillar of the leather
community. Maybe you don’t have enough stories
to fill a book, or the time or desire or skills to write
one. That’s what SoundsKinky: A Leather
Oral History is about. Tell us the stories
you have, and let us share them with everyone else.
Yes, on the surface, referring to a test-based
website as an “oral” history seems odd, but
our goal is to present these stories – large and
small – as told by the people who lived them, or
as told by those who heard them from the people who lived
them. As we go along, SoundsKinky will
incorporate photographs, sounds clips, and even video
to accompany the stories and sometimes to tell them.
