Wonder Woman v2 #175

Wonder Woman v2 #175 cover

Date:

December 2001

Title:

“The Witch & The Warrior: Part Two — Girl Frenzy”
(Cover Title: “The Witch is Back”)

Plot:

The assembled female superheroes are having a hard time in combatting Circe’s army of female supervillains in New York.  For example, Inferno is frozen solid by Killer Frost.

Only scenes featuring Legion characters are dealt with here.

Credits:

Phil Jimenez (Story / Pencils) (footnote) • Andy Lanning (Inks) • Trish Mulvihill / Tom McCraw (Colors) • Heroic Age (Separations) • Comicraft (Letters) • Tom Palmer Jr. (Assistant Editor) • Eddie Berganza (Editor) • Jim Lee (Cover)
An additional penciller and several additional inkers were also credited on this issue, but the pencils on the pertinent page are clearly Jimenez, and assuming the inkers were listed from front to back, the pertinent inker is Lanning (and the style matches his).  As for which colorist, who knows?

1. Presumably this is the Eve Eden Nightshade.  It is a costume I’ve not seen before.

Analysis Notes

General Only page 3:7-9 is dealt with here.
3:8-9 The green captions are dialogue from Oracle.
3:8 In most cases, the characters are paired up in teams of familiarity, or against foes whose powers they will work well against.  Gypsy was presumably part of this team, and Vixen is a former Justice League teammate of hers.  The presence of the Hyena would also be a good reason for the inclusion of Vixen, given her animal-based powers.  Inferno is obviously a good candidate to go up against Killer Frost (although Firehawk might make more sense there, since they have fought before), but her presumed connection to Gypsy (seen in Wonder Woman v2 #174 and dating to The Final Night #1) aids in explaining her presence on this team.  As for Nightshade, well, she had to go with some team.
3:9 Despite Killer Frost’s comment, no one ever seems to freeze to death (much less suffocate) when encased in comic book ice, and a fire-powered character like Inferno is least likely to do so.  We don’t see it in this story, but we can safely predict Inferno’s escape from the ice in a few seconds.
Neron’s “bad girl” power upgrade on Killer Frost seems to have worn off (thankfully), or at least the costume bits did.
